Take the Family out this summer for some fun. We have four family friendly base camp events this year!

1. Big Meadows at 7,600', July 11th through 13th in Sequoia National Forest, This event is near fishing, the famous Buck Rock Lookout and Sequoia National Park.

2. Edison reservoir August 1st through 3rd on top of the sierra at 7,600' has the Vermillion resort and great fishing.

3. The Courtright reservoir trip August 22nd through 24th high in the Sierra at 8,170 ft with fishing great views and clean Sierra air.

4. The Camp Nelson at 7,000' September 12th through 14th on the Tule River in the Sequoia National Forest. One of the trails we are working in the area goes through three Giant Sequoia groves; the area and the campground are beautiful.

Long Description: The goal of this project is to recon the trails we will be working this year to create detailed work requirements for each trail. This information is critical in preparing the HSVTC to know what to expect and to plan what equipment and people to task to each particular trail project. These recon trips can be a family backpacking trip or day trip. Unfortunately, the HSVTC does not presently have funding to cover any of the costs of these trips, but greatly appreciates your invaluable contribution(s) of securing vital trail condition information. This opportunity is another way for you to support the non-profit HSVTC and help to improve the trail conditions within our National Forests, while experiencing a beautiful hike in the mountains.

Work Activities: Hiking a designated trail, utilizing GPS to mark trouble spots and recording trail conditions, along with pictures and descriptive notes

Short Description: Rehabilitate Lakeview Trail from Raymond Road toward lake

Long Description: This Day long Project starts at 8:00 AM at the Raymong Bridge on Raymond Rd at the end of Eastman Lake. The trail is a moderately strenuous trail that needs repair. The trail is 4.5 miles long but we will probably not finish all 4.5 miles.

Work Activities: Mostly hand work clearing and repairing the sections of trail that need repair. Some rock work possibly moving some downed trees.

Long Description: Continuation of the work completed in 2011 and 2012 on the Long Meadows to Summit Lake Trail. Trail has deeply rutted sections that threaten safe foot traffic and stock travel.

Short Description: Family-friendly camping with multiple projects for people of all ages.

Long Description: Volunteers can arrive Wednesday afternoon and leave as late as Sunday afternoon. You are encouraged to stay over Wednesday night to aclimate. Food will be provided Wednesday dinner thru Sunday breakfast. Volunteers can work 1 to 3 days. This event is family friendly. There are many attractions in the National Parks you can easily visit; and, we have volunteer work for all ages. Experienced crew leaders will train volunteers in general trail maintenance techniques and safe usage of hand tools. We will be removing brush and trees, repairing water bars, and installing water diversion structures on the Deer Meadow and Kanawyer Trails, along with The Rowell Meadow, Weaver Lake and Jennie Lake Trails within the Jennie Lakes Wilderness. A primative Solar shower setup will be provided.

Short Description: Very strenuous, heavy rock work on Stevenson/Iron Creek Trails in Hemlock Crossing area of Ansel Adams Wilderness

Event Type: Vital Trail Maintenance (VTM) - Trip Type: Backpacking

Long Description: Volunteers are encouraged to stay over at the trailhead on Friday night to become acclimated. This project is very strenuous with a long 8-mile hike in and out, with lots of heavy rock work. This project will provide the public a safe and unimpeded passage to the trails that service this wilderness area and back country. The work will include contouring portions of the path and building earthen water bars for erosion control, if needed. Materials such as dead brush may be dragged to the site to help break the visual line of the path. Trail reconstruction will consist mainly of handwork. which includes construction of stairs, heavy rock work, rebuilding trail bed, construction of water bars, bucking of downed trees, brushing of overgrown portions of the trail, and other standard trail construction needs indicated by the lay of the trail.

Materials such as dead brush may be dragged to the site to help break the visual line of the path. Most trail reconstruction will consist of hand work. Short Description: Jenny Lakes Backpacking Trip

Event Type: Vital Trail Maintenace (VTM) - Trip Type: Backpacking

Long Description: Volunteers are encouraged to spend Friday night at the trailhead to aclimate before hiking in on Saturday. The work will be to maintain and repair the Jenny Lakes Trail, (Trail 30E09) including repairing trail tread, removing multiple downed trees, and brush work. In many areas of the trail, erosion has removed the tread resulting in rock-filled gullies. A one-mile section of the trail requires the most attention, with more than 20 large, 18dbh-sized trees across the trail. Some areas of the trail are overgrown with brush, and tread width is reduced to less than 12 inches. The remaining 3-mile section (as indicated on the map) has less severe damage, but still needs repairs to return to standards.

Work Activities: This project will provide the public a safe and unimpeded passage to the trails. The work will include contouring portions of the path and building earthen water bars for erosion control, if needed. Materials such as dead brush may be dragged to the site to help break the visual line of the path.
